A complete, healthy, fat-free meal can easily be prepared in this electric rice cooker. The nonstick removable inner pot produces up to 10 cups of cooked rice, while the steaming basket holds enough vegetables or shrimp for two or three hungry people. Simple to operate, the cooker features just one switch and two settings, cook and keep warm. During cooking, a red light is illuminated; when cooking is complete, the switch automatically reverts to the keep-warm setting and a yellow light comes on. Moisture and nutrients are sent back into the cooker by the domed glass lid, which also allows for easy viewing.

After cooking, the rice should be allowed to sit for about ten minutes before the lid is removed. Included with the cooker is a plastic paddle for stirring and serving the rice, as well as a plastic measuring cup. The cup, paddle, pot, and steamer all should be washed by hand in hot, soapy water after each use. The best rice cooker we've used....4
We've used several brands of rice cookers, all claiming to be good. One caught on fire after two months, another lasted only a year before it simply stopped working all together.

When we spotted the Rival cooker at a local store, we bought it based on the name. I've used Rival crockpots since my college days, and have never had a problem with them.

This cooker does the job, and does it well. We've had ours for just over two years, and the non-stick bowl has only now started to show wear. We mainly cook brown rice, with only the occasional white rice meal.

We like the larger capacity bowl. Though we could get along with a smaller bowl, this one allows us to add things in or various recipes, and the warming option keeps the meal nicely warmed.

We plan to replace our current rice cooker with the exact same model.

Good rice BUT......3
I have been making rice with this cooker for 2 months now. It spews starchy boiling rice water on my counter every time I make rice. But,, I like the rice it makes. It is much better than what I made on the stove top. I was considering returning this cooker and getting another, as I checked the reviews, I found that many others had this same problem. I have decided to keep it; I worked out a little system of putting down 3 paper towels on the counter and when the cooking is done, I wrap up the mess and throw it in the garbage.

too small and too slow3
So far it is not a bad product. The only negative side is it takes more than 30 minutes to cook 10 cups rice. It is much longer than the one I used to use.And also be ware that its capacity is ten cups cooked rice, not ten cups uncooked rice. It makes a big different.

Great for chili, soups, etc...5
This is a great value and enduring product. I've had my Rival crock pot for over 10 years, and have used it literally HUNDREDS of times. This is another one of those very low cost but high value kitchen tools.

The low setting allows for slow (12 hour+) cooking overnight or all day. I love to put on a pot of chili before I go to bed or work, and let the house soak up the aroma!

Just be careful with the countertop placement, as the sides get very hot!

We're a Rival Family5
When I was looking for a crockpot, I wanted something affordable and durable. My Mom had a Rival crock pot when I was younger (it was orange and older than the hills). My Dad also has an older version of this one, only it has a plastic lid. After 10 years, the lid broken, but it still works.

I got this one and love it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that are available with some of the more costly models, nor does it have a design. It is just a nice crock pot that is big enough for a small roast or a pot of chili (which is great on a winter's day)

TASTY FOOD GREAT CROCKPOT5
Just bought this crockpot this weekend or actually on Black Friday 2003, it was inexpensive and it is a great way for me to learn how to cook for one instead of making large meals and having to freeze a ton of food.

A great crock pot if you are cramped on space i.e. apartment, studio, small townhouse, cape cod living. Doesn't take up much room and can fit a decent size portions of food in the crock pot.

Makes flavorful food...delicious....the toughest of cuts turn out perfection!

Best Crock Pot5
I have this Crock Pot but my crock insert is white instead of black. I bought this slow cooker probably in the late 1990s. I own three slow cookers (the Rival 3-1/2-quart oval and the Rival 6-quart), and this is the best one and the one I use the most. It is 2-1/2 quarts and is perfect for two people. It cooks the best out of all three of my slow cookers as it does not overcook the food as the other two will. I find that the cooking times listed in most slow cooker cookbooks are very accurate for this Crock Pot, but for my other two larger models, I must reduce the cooking time. I have never had overcooked food in this slow cooker. Everything has always cooked to perfection. Most recipes in slow cooker cookbooks are written for 6 to 8 servings. If I cut the recipes in half, they will fit perfectly in this Crock Pot and fill it 3/4 full. That is just enough food for my husband and me and will usually leave leftovers for one or two more meals for one person. This slow cooker also looks very nice as it is all white and matches my kitchen, so it is always out on the counter. I use it many times a week and I am very happy with it. Since it cooks at such a low temperature, whenever I cook meat, I use the high setting for the first hour and then reduce it to low and cook for one hour less than the stated recipe (since one hour on high is equal to two hours on low). Everything turns out perfectly this way. The potatoes and carrots are perfectly tender and have not cooked down to mush as has happened in my larger, more powerful Crock Pots.

I highly recommend this model if the size is big enough for you because it works the way slow cookers are supposed to work - cooking the food slowly and gently.

Absolute Wonder!5
I had one of these for over 10 years and it never gave me a day's trouble. The only reason I purchased a new one was that the old model did not have a removable crock. Fantastic addition to the small family's kitchen.

Rival Rice Cooker-Screw Bell's and Whistles!
Several hours of my life were wasted pondering what rice cooker to purchase. There are dozen options available and I too was originally getting sucked into the though larger price tag =better rice, how wrong I was. Simple, easy to use, affordable and perfect brown rice on the first try (no easy task). Save your money for Vegas, this is all you need.

Nice for the Price
I just got this today and made my first batch of rice. I think the cooker did a pretty good job. However, if you don't stir it towards the end of the cooking time or when most of the water has evaporated, the rice will brown on the bottom. So it's not a set it and forget it operation. But I like the cooker since I can saute onions and garlic in the bowl before adding the rice. I made a modified version of the chicken and spinach risotto recipe that comes with the cooker, and it turned out really good. I used regular long grain rice, a handful of frozen cut spinach, and added steamed shrimp which I steamed in the basket while the rice was cooking. The cooker automatically switches to warm once the water has evaporated but more water can be added and the cycle restarted if necessary. I think I will find this very useful for making quick one pot meals.

To help keep the starch from bubbling up and spraying out of the vent hole, rinse the rice thoroughly and drain. Heat a small amount of olive oil in the rice bowl, once the oil is heated, carefully add the rice and saute it for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water and continue cooking. Rinsing alone will not prevent the starch from accumulating. I'm not a food scientist and I can't offer a scientific explanation, but something happens to the starch when the rice is sauteed or lightly toasted before steaming and it won't bubble up and out of the vent hole. For a change of pace, I saute onions and garlic in the bowl first and then just put the rice in and saute it along with the other ingredients before adding the water. To jazz it up a bit, I may add a pinch or two of turmeric (to make the rice yellow) to the water and a handful of peas. The possibilities are endless with this little cooker.

My first rice cooker...I love it
I have eyed rice cookers for years but have bought one because I did not want to find a place to store it in the kitchen. When I saw this little red one Target, I picked it up on a whim. I love it!. I've had it for a few months and probably use it at least 3 times a week. My favorite is to make Trader Joe's Brown Rice Medley with vegtable or chicken broth and then steam some vegtables and salmon or fish the last 10 minutes or so. Season differently every time. Makes enough for dinner for 2 and at least one lunch for work the next day. Nothing special but always hits the spot, is easy and requires no thought or planning-- a good default meal. This cooker is easy clean-up, no mess, can't over-cook. I'm anxious to try new recipes.
